Embracing Soulfulness: Understanding Your Essence

Soulfulness is the process of embodying more of your soul into this dimension of being human.

It’s the alignment between your expression as a personality and your purpose as a soul. Building upon mindfulness, soulfulness is the degree to which you have aligned yourself with your core essence and purpose. We will dive deep into the mechanics of soulfulness, what it means for our identity and how this concept can supercharge your spiritual journey.

Understanding Soulfulness

Soulfulness builds upon the common spiritual practice of mindfulness by pointing to the desired outcome of building your awareness which is to activate your soul. To move through the resistance and lessons of the physical, mental, and emotional into the core of your being. When you do this and activate your soul in this dimension of space and time, your alignment with forces and power previously unseen begin to open up. Your field can sustain more soul that then permeates back into your physical, mental, emotional and environmental experiences.

It’s a two way system. The first is expanding beyond the personality into the mystical and the second is bringing the mystical where you have deeper alignment with your soul, back into the physical.

Mindfulness is a critical component of this process as you build awareness of your inner world and develop the skills to release focus on the known and start to move into the unknown. As you develop mindfulness, you activate soulfulness.

One way to look at our purpose in this lifetime is by examining how much of our soul we can activate in this incarnation. Rather than only thinking of spiritual development as leaving the physical for the mystical, we can also explore how much of our soul we are bringing into our humanness.

How much are we living through the ego vs. the soul?

The Components of a Soulful Life

What does it mean to live soulfully? Living soulfully means engaging with the world from a place of deep presence and compassion, making decisions that resonate with our highest selves, and expressing our soul’s authenticity in everything we do.

The first part of being more soulful is to build your awareness of when you are in alignment, and when you are not. There are many ways to initiate this process, but building presence and the ability to sit with discomfort is foundational. As you progress, you become more aware of when you are in separation, or ego/personality and when you are in wholeness. Presence is the mode of communication between the personality and the soul.

The soul is simple, accepting and loving. The ego is complicated, unworthy and stressed.

As we build a soulful life, we can give ourselves high doses of grace along the way. The only way you know when you're not embodying your soul is by becoming aware of it. Then the work is not to judge or berate yourself, it’s simply to hold your process in your heart and know that you’re right where you need to be. If we’re here on this planet, our work is the same. To activate as much wholeness within ourselves as we can while we’re here.

The Role of the Soul in Self-Identity

In the first half of our lives, we’re becoming familiar with who we think we are in relation to what is around us. We’ve come from oneness, back into the realm of perceived separation. This is the development of a healthy sense of self, or ego. We are constantly re-orienting to what will make us superior or inferior in the eyes of others but mostly ourselves. This is natural, and a part of why we are here.

At some point, and this point varies person to person, you start to become aware of something more foundational. If the first phase of life is developing a healthy personality/ego, the second half of life is giving it all up.

And by giving it all up, I mean that we start to relinquish the roles that we have played for the present moment of pure possibility. We move into a field of awareness that is simply aware of itself. We realize that through presence, which is a heartfelt connection to all that is and a realization of oneness that we are at our core more than the personality. We are the awareness that is aware. We’re a powerful consciousness that transcends time and space.

Spiritual development is the process of awakening to this truth.

Answering the Question, Who Am I?

This journey between the ego/personality and the soul is one of self-realization or awakening. It’s an awakening to our true nature. It’s an expansion beyond the limitations of our biological senses.

A powerful way to highlight this journey is through the question, who am I?

When in meditation, introduce this question into your awareness and see how your personality reacts. Who am I?

First, we may list our credentials, education, political party, nationality, race, familial roles, gender and species.

Then we may list our values and our beliefs.

At some point if you keep going into this question, which I encourage you to do in meditation, you may arrive at your thoughts. Am I what I’m thinking?

Then you may notice that there’s a space between the thoughts, that there is something that is witnessing the thoughts.

This journey from attachment to personality to alignment with our soul, is one of building soulfulness. The more you awaken to the communication between your personality and your unlimited soul, the more you bring this wholeness into this dimension.

What a journey.

Everyday Soulfulness

Alright, so you are down to create some more connection between your personality and your soul. How do we do this?

  • Develop your skills of presence through meditation to open up the communication lines between your personality and your soul.

  • Set time aside everyday to realign to your soul before going into your day. This builds consistency and helps bring the vibration of your soul into your day.

  • The soul loves to speak through creative expression, fuel this communication through your hobbies or work.

  • Nature can help you connect to the well within as she is as aware as you are. By speaking and listening to her, you can more easily connect with your foundational self.

  • Don’t skip reflection. Take the time to allow the dots to connect especially after meditation. The information that carries over from the field of pure possibility, or your soul, is rich if you allow it to flow.

By making soulfulness a way of being that you align to everyday, unlimited possibilities will open up for you. Your personality or ego would not have been able to perceive these possibilities due to its limited perspective. But from the perspective of the soul, which is beyond space and time, you gain a whole other view. One that’s ripe with simplicity, presence, love and ease.
